PS/2 cables for keyboards and computer mice

For many years, the round PS/2 connector was the standard for input devices. Even today, PS/2 cables are still used with older computers, till systems, workstations and various business set-ups.
What is a PS/2 connector?
PS/2 is a round, six-pin Mini-DIN connector. The port is usually located at the back of a desktop computer. Some computers have two separate connectors. Other models have a combined connector for a mouse or keyboard.
Traditionally, the following colour coding is often used:
- Purple for a keyboard
- Green for a computer mouse
Not every device follows this colour scheme. You should therefore always check the symbols next to the port and the technical specifications of your equipment.
When do you need a PS/2 cable?
Many new keyboards and mice use USB. However, there are still plenty of situations where a PS/2 connection is required. Think, for example, of older computers that are still in daily use. Certain business and technical systems are also equipped with this connection.
A suitable connection may be required for:
- An older keyboard
- An older computer mouse
- An industrial computer system
- A point-of-sale system
- A computer in a workshop
- Certain KVM solutions
- A fixed business installation
Before ordering, check that the connection on your device is actually PS/2. The plug resembles other round DIN connectors, but the pins may be positioned differently.
Extending an existing connection
Is the computer located under a desk, in a cabinet or further away from your workstation? If so, the keyboard or mouse cable may be too short. A PS/2 extension cable allows you to increase the distance between the device and the computer.
An extension cable usually has a male plug at one end and a female socket at the other. You connect the existing cable to the female end. The male plug is then plugged into the computer. Measure in advance how much extra length you need. Allow enough space to route the cable neatly, but avoid having an unnecessarily long cable behind the desk.
Male and female connectors
When choosing a cable, pay close attention to the type of connector. A male PS/2 plug has visible pins. This plug goes into the computer’s socket. A female connector has openings and is used to connect an existing male plug.
Check both ends before you order. This will prevent you from ending up with two connectors that don’t fit together.
Connecting a PS/2 device
The plug has a fixed shape and can only be inserted into the port one way round. Check the position of the pins and the recess before connecting the cable. Do not force the plug if it does not fit straight away. Otherwise, you may bend the thin pins.
It is best to switch off an older computer first before connecting the device. Then restart the computer. This increases the likelihood that the connected keyboard or mouse will be recognised straight away. When disconnecting, pull on the plug, not the cable. This prevents damage to the connector and the internal wiring.
PS/2 or USB?
USB has largely replaced the PS/2 connection on modern computers. However, PS/2 can still be useful if an older system doesn’t have a free USB port. Existing equipment may also still work perfectly well and doesn’t necessarily need to be replaced straight away.
Does your computer only have USB ports? If so, check whether a suitable converter can be used. Not every simple adapter works with every keyboard or mouse. The connected device must support the conversion, or the adapter must actively convert the signal. As well as PS/2 solutions, take a look at WBNet’s USB cables and adapters. Check these points before placing your order
A round plug does not automatically mean that it is the same connector. You should therefore first compare the cable’s specifications with your equipment.
Pay particular attention to:
- The type of connector
- A male or female connector

- The required cable length
- Intended use (mouse or keyboard)
- Compatibility with your computer
- The orientation of any adapter
Also check whether you need a full-length cable, an extension cable or an adapter. This will prevent you from ordering a product that physically fits but does not work for your specific application.
