Coaxial cables for video, audio and other signals

Start with the devices you want to connect
When choosing a cable, it’s a good idea to first look at both devices. Check which port is on the first device and which connector is required at the other end. A television, for example, may have a different connector to a satellite receiver or modem.
Don’t just look at the shape of the plug. The orientation is also important. A male connector has a protruding pin. A female connector has a socket into which this pin is inserted. For some connections, you need the same connector at both ends. For other applications, the two ends are different.
By checking both connectors in advance, you can avoid ordering a cable that doesn’t fit.
Why is a coaxial connection different?
A coaxial cable has a special structure. In the centre is a conductor that transmits the signal. This core is surrounded by insulating material. Around this is a shielding layer, and on the outside is a protective sheath. The shielding helps to protect the signal from interference caused by other devices and cables. This is important for television, radio and other applications that use a weak or sensitive signal.
The quality of the connection does not depend solely on the cable. Damaged connectors, loose plugs and poorly connected equipment can also cause interference.
Recognising different connectors
There are several types of connector for coaxial connections. IEC connectors are widely used in television and radio. An F-connector is threaded and is found, amongst other things, in satellite equipment, modems, splitters and signal amplifiers.
BNC connectors are often used in professional video, measurement and security equipment. A digital audio connection with RCA plugs can also utilise a coaxial signal.
These connectors are not directly interchangeable. You should therefore check the full product description and not just the name of the cable. If two devices have different ports, a suitable adapter may be required.
Check that the cable is compatible with your device
Also check the cable’s impedance in ohms. This must be compatible with the device. For television, satellite and many digital video applications, a 75-ohm version is usually used. In radio, antenna and measuring equipment, 50 ohms is also common.
A plug may fit, but the cable itself may still be unsuitable. This can result in signal loss or a less reliable connection. You should therefore always consult the manual or technical specifications of the connected device.
The correct length to avoid unnecessary signal loss
Measure the route between the devices and take into account bends, furniture and cable ducts. Choose a length that allows sufficient space to connect the cable without tension. A cable that is too short may pull on the plugs, which could damage the connectors or connections. A cable that is far too long is also not ideal; the excess length must then be coiled up and neatly concealed.
Over longer distances, the quality of the cable becomes particularly important. This is because the signal can weaken along the way. Good shielding and a secure connection help to keep the link stable.
Identifying and resolving faults
Pixelation on the TV screen, sound drop-outs or a connection that keeps cutting out may indicate a problem with the cabling. First, check that the plugs are firmly connected. Then check whether the cable is damaged, kinked or sharply bent. Is the cable running alongside power cables or devices that cause a lot of interference? If so, try routing the connection differently. Also check any splitters, adaptors and wall sockets. Every additional connection can affect the signal.
Do not replace all components at once. By testing step by step, you’ll be better able to identify where the interference is coming from.
Coax or another type of cable?
Coax isn’t the right choice for every connection. A modern television, for example, can also be connected via HDMI. A network cable is usually used for a computer network. For audio equipment, RCA, jack or optical cables may be required. The available ports and the function of the devices determine which solution is suitable. Do not use just any adapter if the signals differ technically. In some cases, an active converter is needed to convert one signal to another.
Connect and use with care
Always insert a plug straight into the socket. Does the connector have a screw thread? If so, tighten it gently, without using too much force. A plug that is tightened too tightly can damage the socket.
When disconnecting, pull on the connector, not the cable. Store a cable that you are not currently using loosely coiled. Sharp kinks and heavy objects can damage the interior, even if the outer sheath appears intact.
