Fibre-optic cables for a fast and stable connection

How does a fibre-optic cable work?
A fibre-optic cable contains one or more very thin fibres. Light signals are transmitted through these fibres. These signals carry the data from one connection point to another. A key advantage is that fibre-optic cables are less susceptible to electromagnetic interference. As a result, devices, power cables and machinery have less impact on the signal. This makes fibre-optic cables suitable for home use, offices and professional technical environments.
However, the cable itself is more sensitive to sharp bends than a standard copper cable. You should therefore handle it with care and avoid kinking the cable or compressing it too tightly.
Single-mode and multi-mode
When choosing a cable, you will often come across the terms ‘single-mode’ and ‘multi-mode’. These types are not simply interchangeable.
Single-mode fibre
Single-mode is mainly used for connections over longer distances. The fibre has a narrow core through which the light signal passes. OS2 is a commonly used fibre class for single-mode connections.
This type is used, amongst other things, in fibre-optic modems, connection points, corporate networks and connections between different rooms or buildings.
Multi-mode fibre
Multi-mode is primarily intended for shorter distances. This type is widely used within buildings, server rooms and data centres. Well-known fibre classes include OM2, OM3, OM4 and OM5. Always check which fibre class is supported by your equipment. The connector may fit, but the type of fibre may not be suitable for the connection.
Check the connector type
The connectors at both ends must be compatible with your modem, switch, patch panel or other equipment. Commonly used connectors are LC and SC. These connectors differ in size and do not fit into the same port.
For example, you may need a cable with:
- LC to LC
- SC to SC
- LC to SC
- LC/APC to LC/APC
- SC/APC to SC/APC
Check not only the letters, but also the full name of the connector. UPC and APC connectors have different finishes and must not be combined indiscriminately.
You should therefore first check the connector on both devices. The manual or the connection point will usually specify which type of connector is required.
Choosing between simplex and duplex
A simplex cable contains a single fibre and uses a single connection. This type is used, for example, for certain connections between a fibre-optic modem and the fibre-optic connection point. A duplex cable has two fibres. One fibre can be used for sending data and the other for receiving it. Duplex connections are common in professional networks and server environments.
Before ordering, check carefully how many fibres you need. Simplex and duplex connections are not interchangeable for every application.
What length do you need?
Measure the distance between the two connection points in advance. Take into account the route the cable will need to follow. A cable usually runs along a wall, through a cabinet or behind equipment. The straight-line distance between the devices is therefore often insufficient.
Choose a little extra length so that the cable isn’t pulled too tight. A cable that’s far too long isn’t practical either. You’ll then need to store the remaining section neatly and without any sharp bends.
Don’t lay the cable under heavy furniture and don’t pull on the connector. When disconnecting, always hold the plug and not the cable itself.
Fibre optic or a standard network cable?
Fibre optic and standard Ethernet cables both transmit data, but they do so in different ways. Fibre optic uses light. An Ethernet cable uses electrical signals via copper wires.
Which solution you need depends on your equipment and the available connections. Does your router, computer or switch have a standard RJ45 port? If so, take a look at WBNet’s network cables. For equipment with a fibre-optic port, you’ll need a suitable fibre, connector and fibre class. Also check whether the network module used is suitable for single-mode or multi-mode.
What should you look out for?
Always check the following specifications:
- The connector at the first end
- The connector at the second end
- Single-mode or multi-mode
- The correct fibre class, such as OS2 or OM3
- Simplex or duplex
- The required length
- The connection on your equipment
By checking these details in advance, you reduce the risk of ordering the wrong version. If in doubt, check the technical specifications of your modem, switch or patch panel.
